My husband Paul and I emigrated to Australia from the UK in August 2008. Arriving mid-winter and with no furniture to speak of, we waited for our container to arrive from the UK with our belongings. We rented a lovely house and filled it with two camp chairs, an inflatable bed and a few items donated by friends. This did not make it easy to slip into our old couch potato ways. So with trainers on we began to explore our neighbourhood. Within weeks we were walking daily, cycling and bushwalking on the weekends. Not having any of our home comforts was the catalyst to improving our fitness and overall health.

There is a lot of equipment in the gym. The purpose of a lot of machines is to get people working out in a gym because it’s easy. I guess they need to provide variety too. If you really want to gain muscle and be functionally strong, use free weights or your bodyweight. It’s way more effective.

Nine ways to sleep better

In 2013 I watched a friend post face book updates on her journey to run a marathon at the end of the year. She did it and I was so happy for her and inspired. I had previously made three attempts to ‘start’ running, but after 500m was out of breath, struggling and wondering ‘how do these people do it?’
